19th c. Maronite leader
Youssef Bey Karam (1823–1889) was a Lebanese Maronite leader and military figure who resisted the Mutasarrifate system imposed after the 1860 sectarian conflicts. He led an armed rebellion against the Ottoman-appointed governor Daoud Pasha in the 1860s, seeking to restore Maronite political autonomy. Defeated, he went into exile in Europe and became a symbol of Maronite resistance and Lebanese patriotism.
