Egyptian president
Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918–1970) was the second President of Egypt (1956–1970) and the most influential Arab leader of the twentieth century. A leader of the 1952 Free Officers' coup, he championed Arab nationalism, pan-Arabism, and non-alignment. He nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, formed the United Arab Republic with Syria (1958–1961), and pursued land reform and industrialization. His defeat in the 1967 war diminished his stature but not his enduring symbolic importance.
