Doctor Traboulsi, welcome. We were a bit late on you…

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi:

No…Not to worry.

Marcel Ghanem

I would like to thank your role and efforts in relation of your arrangements for Professor Chomsky’s visit to Beirut. Dr. Traboulsi, can you specify the location of Chomsky in the map of international thinkers and culture?

Dr. Traboulsi

First of all, Noam Chomsky is a scientist, despite all the political talks; he is in the end a scientist in linguistics as well as the inventor of the most important theory in Syntax Structures for this era. I would like to add on this, despite my lack of full knowledge; the theory played a major role in influencing the making of computer language. At minimum, this point would give an idea about the primary quality in the 21st century regarding the role of the discoveries and theories of Chomsky in Syntax Structures which he participated to. This is one.

As I believe regarding what appeared in the interview today, he is a researcher, in a sense of collectivity. He is a man of science who seeks to discover facts in social life its relations in International relations, as well as he struggles for it. Hence, this led to the flow of facts, history, statistics, and researching public opinions that he discussed; I personally find it remarkable because …

Marcel Ghanem (adding a comment):

By continuing activity till his current age

Dr. Traboulsi continues:

… Because it is very rare that I know an intellect that researches and enters the in-depth of authority and analyzes the mechanisms of the authority’s practice through documents like what Chomsky does. He reads what the intellects would hate dwelling into, such as the magazines of business men. If he tells you that “I describe globalization as a new imperialism” and you tell him that this word is not new, he would say that “I didn’t use that word, I read it in one of the magazines of the business men. It is the businessmen speaking and describing themselves while admitting that they are doing a new imperialism.” This quality gave him the capacity to be a primary pioneer of our present cultural era , and in contrast, it would be difficult to understand the complexities of our current era as well as its trends without reading the works of Chomsky disregarding the fact whether we would fully agree with him, partially, or totally disagree with him. His works contain a premeditated and observatory dimension. He was the first to discover the qualities of globalization, whether Economic or others, as well as he was the first to open a whole Science, of which he called the Science of Media, i.e. the criticizing of media whereby he established a link between the Media and “Democracy” . He was aware that the Media was under the influence and control of money and monopolies rather be what in a democratic matter should have been, reflecting the opinion of the public rather than be a tool to create the public opinion.

As for the topic of Democracy, since the 90’s he has been discussing the danger of the modern world in relations to democracy. When I say danger, I mean the new orientations of capitalism to democracy. Actually there is a book for him titled “Deterrent Democracy.”

These are few examples regarding the gigantic influence of Chomsky in our world despite the fact, of course, his role in struggling which is expresses itself on its own: such as this struggle in direction of collective Justice in face of globalization.

Last but not least, the US foreign policy. We, the Arabs, are known to complain extensively that the West does not understand us. Chomsky here would step in to assist you (the Arabs) and would tell you: “Why not you understand the West” Understanding the West… this may be a big word but Chomsky at least sheds light on US foreign policy and based on these facts you might modify your perspective. These are the facts, just as we heard tonight, and in light these trends as well as interests lies our decision. These are basic elements if we want to live in relations to the West, learn how to defend ourselves, and resist as well as effect in this current relation I believe Chomsky provides us with a very rich material to do so.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 2)

Dr. Traboulsi, last question regarding the topic of the character of Chomsky, and from the replies we heard tonight I could hear your private opinion about the file of today which moves the Arab masses. The categories of people that Chomsky or his ideas influence are very rare in occasions that the Squares are filled, unlike what happened in Chomsky’s lectures in Beirut. Is it only the leftists and the objecting youth or Chomsky simply affects everyone?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

I believe that to be chosen by international referendums that the most important intellect known by this era reveals the idea of an audience that does not always goes down to the street.

First in the United States, the surprising thing and you heard him say it, the large diversified audience who call the interference of Chomsky and to tour the United States, as in West East North and South, on continuous manner through invitations to give lectures. These lectures are given in front huge number of audiences.

As for his impact on the international arena is probably in specific Latin America, and this sphere is the most touched, because it is most affected by the foreign policies of the United States administration due to its location next to the centers of the decision makers. It is hard to define accurately who his audience is.

I am surprised about his welcoming in Lebanon, especially from the large numbers that know him and read his books, as well as the large number that his writings mean something to them. Now naturally that all does not fill halls, but in the American University of Beirut’s Assembly Hall, they had to install an outside big screen since half the audience was outside the Hall, same thing happened in Beirut Theater, and the in the South. Over here, I am talking about the South gathering that took place in the Cultural Council for South Lebanon. What was also surprising the types of question asked by people who read Chomsky and I would like to stress that Chomsky is the Internet.

Marcel Ghanem (Commenting)

This is true…

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi (continues)

Those who did not read Chomsky’s books have definitely read on Chomsky in the Internet.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 3)

Is there any role for the Intellects in aiming the policies of the United States administration? Based on what we heard today, and from your readings, contacts, and your rich knowledge, do you think there is a potential for these intellects to aim the US policy? We heard today how Chomsky did this campaign.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

The US intellects in specific or the intellects in General?

Marcel Ghanem

The Intellects in General

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

I think that the major lesson from Chomsky that the answer is yes. Culture does have a role. You can see Noam Chomsky as a mighty man confronting an empire. As for the term “Correcting” that I do not know. I know the extent of what the Intellects did and hence becomes adopted by the Public Opinion, and afterwards the public opinion becomes a materialistic force which can pressure, this is of course is there; there is nothing bizarre about it. People go to the streets under the influence of ideas. Let me add, by the way, that ideas and interests do not contradict each other. The capacity of ideas to meet the interests and capacities of the people reflects the extent of its seriousness and reality.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 4)

Dr. Traboulsi, while talking with Professor Chomsky, we spoke about the topic of 14th of March or as read or spoken by the Americans ‘the Cedar Revolution’. Between the Cedar Revolution and Lebanon, as also called ‘Hezbollah Land’, Fawwaz Traboulsi, where he sees the future of Lebanon specially in light of theories emerging that talk about the necessity of putting Lebanon on neutral grounds within the Arab-Israeli conflict for the next stage. Between which those options that attract different groups inside the Lebanese arena?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

I do not think I can find myself in any of these two primary camps, similar to what Chomsky said, but to be more detailed:

First, the difference between both is not necessarily obvious. In the beginning, what is the meaning of sovereignty if your defense of Lebanon against Israel is not considered sovereignty? My simple answer would be that I am abiding with what I believe and refuting the propagandas imposed on us by the class of politicians.

Marcel Ghanem (commenting)

You mean 14th and 8th of March

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Yes, you can say I am 11th of March

Marcel Ghanem (laughing)

Or you are 10th of May.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Either the bread or the sovereignty, this means either the allegiance to Syria or the allegiance to the United States. I believe and always believe that this small country can have a certain ratio of independence, based on an Arab dimension rather than following it, and a tail to external ambitions, especially to those that express traditionally American – Israeli interests. I do believe in this perspective, even 10th of May, is being demanded what is the relationship between Bread and Independence. Moreover, politically, everything is being politicized to the extent that such a syndrome is putting away and burying the real and effective interests and deviating away from the problems. This country is in-debt, this country’s social issues are escalating, this country’s youth are traveling, and we are having fun with the “Lebanese” size of Sheba’a farms. One wants it Lebanese in order to continue with the resistance, let us be honest, and the other wants it Lebanese so that Israel withdraws and that way there is no need for arms. Isn’t there anymore imagination in order to invent answers to questions that are relevant to the people?

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

Inventing? You mean be honest with the people by realistic answers.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboli

I have doubt about this ruling class is concerned about handling these major questions. All this time till now in this political war, did anyone take into consideration that the political media and security in general can be resolved by social and economic security? Something to give economics a chance to breath? Something for the dignity of the people that would make them less attached to their sects and their leaders? These are the questions that we should tackle.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting and Question 5)

But Doctor Traboulsi, so that I can conclude that political axis, today it is clear on the Dialogue table that the talk of the Syrian – Iranian option and the American – European – Western option. Do you think that the Lebanese are capable of separating from these options that they want to isolate Lebanon in a sense “We do not want America Europe, Iran, Syria, and so on” Is it that easy to accomplish that?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

On the contrary, this is a very difficult thing to do, but if we didn’t do it, it shows that we did not learn a thing from the war or what lessons it taught us.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupts)

You think we did not learn from the war?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Yes we did, but I am also convinced that we should learn from the war.

Second, don’t you think, Marcel, that there are people always outside this whole issue? This means that we always alienate these problems. So, I do not know what is the story of the Syrian – Iranian axis or the story of the American Axis. For starters, I am one of those who think that there is no clash between the two. Second, I see that there is a strange dance between Syria and the United States, even what Chomsky said was not totally accurate, the core of everything is the Golan Heights. There is a regime that behaves in a sense “that you ask me to do things, but there is something I do not want to speak of because there is something you are not speaking of.” Hence, in terms of US foreign policy, they speak of an Arab-Israeli peace but towards Syria, there are other things demanded, just as there is demanded…

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

Let us speak of this issue after the advertisement break, so Fawwaz Traboulsi will speak of US’s policy towards Syria, Iraq, Iran, and as well as the Palestinian cause after this advertisement break.

[Break]

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting & Question 6)

Now, we arrive to the final section at “Kalam el Nas”’ special episode with Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi. Doctor, I interrupted you before the advertisement break while talking about the US foreign policy.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

No, you didn’t. I only wanted to say in relations to the core of the US-Syrian in relations is the subject of Golan Heights, which neither the Syrian regime always stresses on nor the United States considers this subject as urgent or finished. Even if we consider the withdrawal from Gaza abolished the rest, it evolved to become that the issue of withdrawal from the West Bank, exactly as Chomsky described it, that the West Bank was united except for three or four parts, while the topic of the Golan Heights was replaced. The main question would be: “Is solution for the Arab-Israeli Peace negotiations still continuing or is it over?” This leads to the dilemma of the regimes that signed or in its opinion there are separate agreements, isn’t the solution on a duo-basis is over? This is one side of the situation. What is being offered to Syria is similar to what is being proposed to Palestine: “Submit what you have concessions then we see if there is a solution.” I do believe I want to add my voice to what Chomsky said in a clear manner, which is the topic of Palestine.

Hammas is being demanded three conditions. These three conditions are already refuted by the United States and Israel: the seize-fire, the formation of two nations (and later followed by mutual recognition of both States), and abandoning the military resistance. What is required is to end the military means of pressure while the Truce nobody wants it because…

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupts)

You take away a card…

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Because it takes away the primary National cause which is having two nations, then we see what ought to be done. I believe if we are asked to think about the future especially about this Arab illusion of what has remained from total peace in return of total withdrawal. Who can give peace and who got the capacity for war?

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

In that case what was role of the Arab Initiative?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

It is over, over. The Arab initiative, which is the Beirut project, has ended except for the fact there are regimes that are hesitant without knowing that the bi-lateral solution is what caused the downfall of the Arab common cause and currently we have no answers whatsoever. Just like our local authority here, they discuss if the Prime Minister should go to Damascus or not. Fine, but as a citizen I have the right to know what he is going to say there. I also would like to know if Syria sees this country, like the parties here, as either ruled by the Syrians or by the Americans. There are Lebanese that didn’t display their opinions, and a little bit adventurous by saying that there most of the Lebanese are a bit attached to their country as well as they want it a bit Arab culturally.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

What do you mean by little bit Arabic or Attached, how does it work?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

There is no contradiction because you can be Lebanese and Arab in an open culture without having any contradiction.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

What does this has to do with what we are discussing?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Lebanon, to the very details is like that.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

What does this has to do with the Syrian topic, Doctor, in terms of the Lebanese – Syrian relations?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

I was just stressing that the majority of the Lebanese, they don’t want to be ruled. Arab Nationalism does not mean to them as it is supposed to be in relation that Damascus ruling the Lebanese, nor the openness to the world means that Mr. Feltman would rule the nation. That is what I think, and hopefully I am mistaken, that what I think about the majority regarding …

Marcel Ghanem (Laughing and interrupting)

Doctor, this is the first time you allow me to take a position live on TV.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Feel free anytime to do so.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 7)

Doctor Traboulsi, based on Chomsky’s talks regarding the topic of the Syrian regime, he spoke about this regime and described it, while at the same he described it as a regime opposing the US policies, as if Chomsky is standing on a contradictory polarity from the two issues. Is Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi with the changing of this regime? Is there any potential to change it? Are we allowed as Lebanese to discuss the issue of changing the system over there? Specially there are several politicians, actually not several but there are politicians that welcomed some organizations and groups that oppose the Syrian regime. Second, the issue of the behavior of the Syrian regime whether it was in Iraq or Lebanon. The subject of changing the system is the topic of changing the behavior of the Syrian regime.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

I believe there is a gigantic paradox that now is apparent. There is a saying we can’t do much for the Arab world or what is outside, but there is a claim that we can decide the fate of Syria through Lebanon. Therefore, my clear and honest answer is to whoever had the illusion that there is an international tendency to change the regime in Syria from the outside:

First, their analysis to the US policy is wrong.

Second, his position is also wrong for a simple reason which is “if I stress on the right of the Lebanese to define what regime they want, which is not the security regime imposed on them from Damascus; therefore, as a Lebanese I should also recognize the right of the Syrian people to decide how they should change their own regime through their own means rather through force from the outside.

Now, there are opposing forces in Syria that I do believe that I defend their right to work and I oppose the arrests taking place on it, and this leads me to believe that Democracy is the most feasible way for this context to have great relations between the two countries to solve plenty of problems between Lebanon and Syria. To have two nations that are democratic also means that Lebanon too should be also transformed to a democratic regime. I am not convinced that this regime is democratic; a system that allows freedom is one thing, and a democratic system is another. This is, what I believe, just an opinion just I respect the opinion of the free Syrian people in free elections and let them decide their own fate. Let me also say now most “Majority” who are still influenced from the Syrian dominance imposed on them by Damascus and cherish the idea to pay back by changing the system in Syria from Lebanon.

I want to also say more. These attempts to do such change are creating a binding factor while changing two polarizing patriotism in two countries which is Lebanese and Syrian against each other, which is more dangerous and making relations reach most dangerous stages in the history of these two countries. This situation is leading to two people mobilized against each other. Tomorrow these two regimes would agree and this would lead that the woes would be on us.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 8)

True. Dr. Traboulsi, we still got three questions regarding three topics discussed by Chomsky, and I would wish to hear your opinion, in a summary, about them. Regarding the issue of Iraq, I do not know what is your opinion or commentary to the topic regarding what he said and what is your personal opinion on the matter specially that Chomsky said that the United States does not want Iraq to be a free, sovereign, and independent. I would like to hear your opinion on the matter, before entering the issue of Iran.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Yes, I would like to add one more thing which is the greatest difficulty factor, which is not only the US invasion itself of Iraq. The US destroyed the Iraqi nation and not only the regime of Saddam Hussein. Hence, we have a problem, a gigantic problem. The problem of reconstruction is how you build re-build a nation and its identity in Iraq. I am one of those who defended against the return to a central concentrated regime, and that is an illusionary speculation, because there is a longing to such a system…

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

You mean a central regime like the Ba’athi regime?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Yes, there is this speculation either to have a central executive system or the nation would split. I was one of those who demanded the application of an Arab Federation, which means the Kurdish Province as well as the other two because this split is real. This split can be called the Split of Nationalisms.

Marcel Ghanem (Interrupting)

This is something similar to what Chomsky spoke off earlier.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

He spoke on the region? Yes. This is my first point.

Second point, the United States does not a sovereign and independent regime for Iraq, the question henceforth the greatest question is how to save Iraq from a civil war, which is one of the results of the invasion to Iraq. This civil war is partly due to the invasion, partly due to Saddam Hussein’s regime, and thirdly due to the sectarian parties in Iraq. These are the three factors for the war. There is this look to Iraq from a combination of different ethnicities and two sects rather than seeing three different groups speaking. This current status is what is most dangerous in Iraq more than it was before.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 9)

Then what achievements did the Americans do in Iraq?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

They achieved nothing. They didn’t anything except destroy a whole nation. They simply scared Syria, and we Lebanese paid the price for scaring Syria. They also scared Iran, and whatever Chomsky said about speeding the pace of nuclear production has relations is correct regarding the feeling strategically that whoever came to Iraq, came to Iraq to continue on Iran and Syria. I think one of the greatest war crimes committed in the modern world is the invasion of Iraq. The rest is just rubbish talk, they didn’t do anything else.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 10)

They say in the theory of Transition Nation, that what is happening in Iraq today is the introduction of this big functional nation which is prosperous economically. They are saying that it is natural before reaching such a nation. I asked Chomsky about the theory of the War that creates nation and it is the nation that creates a war.

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Actually, the theory of Tilly applies to the construction of a nation through war, and renewing the legitimacy of a nation through war. You can say that Saddam Hussein renewed his legitimacy / authority hrough war. Now, we are speaking under the danger of having a civil war struggle and not the legitimacy of a country talking control of its components through its war on another nation.

I believe, and let me be clear that there is no transition stage, that the real crisis is that Iraq is lost in going to the direction of a federation which is built on the components of its people as well as working on its relations between each other. This would lead to a oil-rich nation is keeping its control on its oil in a federation manner and not the United States because in my opinion the only thing the United States didn’t take into consideration is the separation of Iraq into two parts: two parts of the nation are rich in oil and are concentrated in the North and South. The interests of the United States, which directs the interest of the planning, didn’t take into consideration the separation of a country since they already control its oil. Now, this separation can take place whether the United States wants that or not, and this is the big question if it takes place or not.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 11)

Dr. Traboulsi, when you speak of the Iranian issue, there are the seven truths discussed in order to justify the bombing of Iran: such as Iran is developing weapons of Mass Destruction, Iran is disregarding the International community, Iran support Terrorism, Iran is involving itself in Iraqi Affairs, sanctions on Iran won’t be successful, and there are no means of negotiations with those people as well as that the Iranians want to change the regimes that are geographically close to them. What are the contradictory justifications to these seven truths?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

Before any justifications, the media always over-exaggerates the capacities of the US army. For example, I want to assume that the US army wants to invade Syria; they have 120,000 soldiers in Iraq. I may be not a military expertise, but I can see things with an open eye, and this leads to the assumption that they are using their maximum capacity in Iraq. Whatever they say on Iran on justifications, I tend to add my voice to what Chomsky is saying. There is the suggestion of Mohammad Barada’i, which says before arriving to the hypothesis of military nuclear power, there is the peaceful nuclear power. The nuclear power of peace is placed through out the world under international observations. The other point is what moderate Egypt says, which is very simple. If Iran makes it to attain nuclear power, then it means in the region there are two countries that have nuclear capacities so let there be efforts to mass disarmament of nuclear arms in the region.

The United States after all are very relaxed to have two nuclear powers in Asia in the same region, which are India and Pakistan; hence the region can afford in face of Israel a country with nuclear strength in order to live with it and find a solution for that problem; this is also to take into consideration that scientifically I believe we are years behind before reaching that level according to the agency (1 hour, 42 minutes, & 50 seconds).

Marcel Ghanem (Question 12)

Does it suit the Arabs that the Persians have this nuclear power, Dr. Traboulsi?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

For starters, I neither use the term Persians nor consider the Arab-Iranian hostilities that Saddam Hussein inherited us, adding without any doubts Iran has nationalistic struggles within its leadership, along with certain conflict to the Arabs regarding its expansionary policies on its Islamic role in the face over the overall Arab face. While taking what I just said into consideration, I do believe that the only threat nuclear Iran threat is directed towards Israel rather than the Arabs.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 13)

Dr. Traboulsi, the Arabs, towards what is planned and working with them (those Arab nations), that dismantlement plan, some see it would take place in a lot of Arab nations. How can a person face it?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

First, I am going to dwell on this question. For starters, we got the complex of Sykes-Pico, and in our minds due to that complex we believe that whatever the West does, they are doing dismantlement of Arab countries.

For starters, Sykes-Pico is assembling, even though they split Syria to five provinces, but they unified Iraq. It was made of three provinces, but they unified them into one. I am against the permanent “catastrophization”. This of course needs a long research regarding the Arab status, but probably the most two pressing points are:

The first is the Arab- Israeli struggle. Something has changed, specially after 9/11and the Oslo reactors, which is the idea of peace in return for land within the Arab mind is over. This means there is no other answer, and we are being demanded at least to contribute to this lie called bi-lateral solutions.

Second, if a person has vision, I do not think there is a framework to re-develop the region in a sense since this region would not re-ally with its components and do different forms of co-ordinations within the economic, social, and market aspects, specially we have a large market, simply like the style of the European Common Market model. This does not mean that one country should over-shadow another country. This also means in Arabism the common interests and perspectives should prevail. This implies that we should not neither go to the past nor the prevalence of one nation over the others. These ideas are of course are being discussed in a summary. Finally, the biggest threat is our transformation to sponsored nations due to this criminal use of oil, and hence we lost the value of work. If I want to summarize the topic: in people’s hands they collect their rights from the outside and inside. The most important value for the renaissance of the nations is the fact people should work rather than rely on external or beneath the ground revenues. If that happens, I think we are on the road towards victory.

Marcel Ghanem (Question 14)

Dr. Traboulsi, what is your new book about which soon will be published?

Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi

The name of the book is “A History of Modern Lebanon” in the Arabic because I did the History of Modern Lebanon in the English language.
